Democratic Republic of the Congo
BASICS’ priorities in DR Congo included scaling up a community-based framework for treating and referring cases of pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria, and referring cases of malnutrition. Emphasis was also placed on revitalizing diarrhea disease case management in the country by improving health workers’ ability to manage diarrhea and reinforce communication for improved home care. And, BASICS linked with USAID/POPPHI to provide technical support to the Ministry of Health and other partners to improve maternal and newborn health. This included integrating essential newborn care with active management of the third stage of labor (AMSTL) and early postnatal care of mothers and babies at the peripheral facility level, and promoting communication strategies to improve family behaviors related to maternal and newborn health at the community level.
