Indonesia
In April 2007, BASICS established a stand-alone project known as the Millennium Challenge Corporation Indonesia/Immunization Project. Funded through a two-year USAID Threshold Grant from the Millennium Challenge Corporation, the project is assisting the government of Indonesia in its efforts to increase completed diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DPT3) and measles immunization rates nationally. The direct work of the project targets 63 districts in seven provinces (East, Central, and West Java; Banten; Jakarta; South Sulawesi; and North Sumatra), where more than 60% of Indonesian children reside. Reaching the project goal of a national average of 80.5% DPT3 and measles coverage of children below one year of age is a key criterion for Indonesia to become eligible for Millennium Challenge Compact funding.
Separate from the immunization project, BASICS is pursuing the introduction of zinc therapy for treating diarrhea, as well as the overall strengthening of diarrheal disease programs in the Indonesia. There are an estimated 1.3 yearly episodes of diarrhea per child in Indonesia, resulting in 25-30 million total annual cases and about 40,000 deaths.
