Iraq
BASICS’ technical assistance program in Iraq began in February 2005 through the training of Ministry of Health staff in diarrheal disease management, and support for the development of a related behavior change communications strategy. BASICS also led the establishment of a National Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) strategy, finalized at a project-organized national workshop in August 2005. The objectives of the strategy included identifying solutions for the major IYCF problems in Iraq, outlining technical directives for the interventions needed to achieve these solutions, and specifying roles and responsibilities for the various actors involved.
In the same year, BASICS provided a distance learning module to help staff at the Ministry of Health develop leadership skills. Planned as a one-time course, the 13-week "Virtual Leadership Development Program" (VLDP) was delivered initially in English to 80 participants. Further demand for the course led to its translation into Arabic and delivery to an additional 74 participants from April to July 2006.
